Parenting Strong Girls

Did you know that the educational and career choices females make are strongly influenced by the expectations of their parents? It is critical that we arm our young girls with the skills and determination they need to succeed to become independent, hearty, and resilient. If we want our girls to grow into strong leaders we need to equip them early. We need to send them messages about themselves, their choices and their capabilities that ready them for their adult lives. To steer girls toward success we need to:
  • Avoid rescuing: Allow girls to wrestle with problems and arrive at their own solutions.
  • Praise competence and skill over beauty.
  • Support effort over outcome.
  • Boost technical mastery with tools, machinery, computers.
  • Promote participation in nontraditional school activities.
  • Stress math, science and technical classes.
  • Provide role models of dynamic, successful women.
