Brains or beauty? Women still conflicted?

I almost lost my breakfast when I read this one! This article states:

"Women still have a complex and contradictory relationship with their own image according to a poll released on Tuesday that found 25 percent of those questioned would rather win the "America's Next Top Model" TV show than the Nobel Peace Prize."

When are we going to change? Come on, ladies, "get so over it"! Be smart, be articulate, be confident...that will make you beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Presence of Women Drives Superior Performance

Wow! This study shows once again the benefits of women in leadership roles. David Ross, assistant professor of management at Columbia Business School and Cristian Dezső, of the University of Maryland, have uncovered data showing that having a higher percentage of women in senior management positions is positively associated with better performance by a company. The study lends support to the typical female style of management. Their research acknowledges that female executives tend to manage in a more democratic way, as opposed to the more autocratic approach associated with the stereotypical male boss. That democratic style fosters creativity, teamwork and the desire to solve problems which leads to organizational success. It is interesting to note that Ross and his cohort indicate that male managers are prone to overconfidence which may contribute to financial crisis. Well, it is about time!

Parenting Strong Girls

Did you know that the educational and career choices females make are strongly influenced by the expectations of their parents? It is critical that we arm our young girls with the skills and determination they need to succeed to become independent, hearty, and resilient. If we want our girls to grow into strong leaders we need to equip them early. We need to send them messages about themselves, their choices and their capabilities that ready them for their adult lives. To steer girls toward success we need to:
  • Avoid rescuing: Allow girls to wrestle with problems and arrive at their own solutions.
  • Praise competence and skill over beauty.
  • Support effort over outcome.
  • Boost technical mastery with tools, machinery, computers.
  • Promote participation in nontraditional school activities.
  • Stress math, science and technical classes.
  • Provide role models of dynamic, successful women.
